Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of communication and spiritual wellbeing on family functioning in adult women.

Methods: A descriptive correlational design was used in this study. A convenience sample was composed of 210 adult women registered in one church¡¯s family ministry counseling school in Seoul. Data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, ANOVA, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression with a SPSS WIN 12.0. The instruments used for this study were the Family functioning scale(FACES-¥²) by Olson, the communication scale by Olson and Barnes, and the spiritual wellbeing scale by Palautzian and Folkman.

Results: Family functioning in adult women was significantly influenced by problem communication, economic status, education level and marital state. This regression model explained 38.6% of the variances in family functioning(F=40.782, p=.000). Closed communication explained 17.9% of the variances, economic status explained 10.8% of the variances, education level explained 5.9% of the variances, and marital state explained 4.0% of the variances.

Conclusion: These findings suggest a need to develop an intervening strategy to decrease closed communication among family members in order to improve family functioning in adult women.
